GUWAHATI: The Congress-led opposition Mahajot in Assam, which won 50 seats in the assembly polls this year, is once again heading for bad weather ahead of the crucial bypolls in the state. AIUDF In the opposition front, an issue being raised by the Speaker of the Raijol Dali, Akhil Gogoi.
A war of words has broken out between the leaders of the Congress’ most formidable ally AIUDF and Akhil as Badruddin Ajmal’s party wants a united opposition at any cost before the 2024 general election.
There are some by-elections to be held in Assam, one in Tamulpur, and the other in Gosaigaon in lower Assam, after the death of the meeting. Legislator Leho Ram Boro and Majendra Narjara respectively.
but now in the spotlight Upper Assam Where by-elections are also to be held in Mariani and Majuli. Both the seats are politically important as they can give impetus to the plans of both the ruling and opposition parties. In Mariani last month, the Congress suffered a setback when its four-time MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi joined the BJP. He later resigned from the post of MLA. Majuli, which is now under the attention of the BJP for its all-encompassing Vaishnava culture, is also set to go for a by-election after its representative, former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, is inducted into the Union Cabinet.
Rupjyoti, a strong force in the region, is most likely to be the BJP’s choice for Mariani. Akhil’s home constituency is Mariani, where the Raijar Dal did not field any candidate to ensure the BJP’s defeat in the last assembly elections. Rupjyoti won to re-establish Congress’s grip on the belt, but joined the BJP only the following month.
Rupjyoti had said, “It is shameful that neither the Congress nor the Raijar Dal has the confidence to field a candidate in Mariani.” Turf, Sivasagar.
Not reacting to the remarks, Akhil said that if the Congress didn’t play a bad game, they should be able to field a consensus candidate. Akhil had also urged the party to oust the ‘communal AIUDF’ from Mahajot.
His appeal did not go without a scathing attack from AIUDF leader Aminul Islam, who accused Akhil of helping the BJP through the back door. “The BJP has government at the Center and in the state. It will not be easy to defeat them without a strong opposition. But Akhil wants to divide the secular anti-BJP votes to help the ruling party.”
Assam PCC Speaker Ripun Bora has appealed to Akhil and his allies not to make AIUDF an issue before the crucial by-elections. He said that Mahajot, which includes Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), CPM, CPI, CPI-ML (Liberation) and Anchalik Gana Morcha, are still together and strategizing to take on the BJP. . “In the coming by-elections, two seats are in Bodoland Territorial Area (Tamulpur and Gosaigaon), while the other two are in Upper Assam. The question of fielding AIUDF candidates on these seats does not arise. Hence there should be no effort. To weaken our strength,” Bora told TOI.
He admitted that the Congress has not been able to contact Hagrama Mohilary’s BPF recently. But, it is the BPF which fielded candidates from Mahajot in Tamulpur and Gosaigaon seats in the last assembly elections. Nevertheless, Bora said the Congress is preparing for the bypolls at the party level and talks have been held with other constituents, except the BPF. “All opposition parties should field candidates with consensus. Mahajot’s strategy is clear. We are just waiting for the positive opinion of Raijar Dal and AJP,” he said.
The Congress-led Mahajot in the 2021 Assam elections ended with 50 seats, of which the AIUDF won 16, the BPF four and the CPM one. The Congress’ tally increased from 26 in the 2016 election to three in the 2021 elections to 29 seats.
