Jalandhar: Half of the newly elected MLAs in Punjab have criminal cases against them, compared to 14 per cent in the previous House, while 27 (23 per cent) are facing serious cases. One Legislator One faces an FIR in the murder case and his arrest has been stayed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, while two are facing cases of attempt to murder. The details emerged in a report released by Jaskirat Singh, Parvinder at a press conference here on Monday by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Punjab Election Watch. Singh Kitna and Harpreet Singh. Of the 92 MLAs of AAP, 52 are facing such cases, three out of 18 of Congress, two out of three from SAD and one out of two from BJP.
Jalandhar West AAP MLA Sheetal Angural has a maximum of nine cases, including attempt to murder, kidnapping, illegal confinement, gambling and other offences. Five cases are registered against Khadur Sahib MLA Manjinder Singh Lalpura. Ajnala AAP MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has been named in an FIR in a murder case and his arrest has been put on hold till high time. A case of attempt to murder is registered against former Ludhiana AAP MLA Daljit Singh Grewal, apart from two other cases.
Both Lalpura and Grewal have one case each for assault or criminal force with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman. Congress MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria The trial court had convicted a 45-year-old case of kidnapping a woman to compel her to marry and the high court quashed her imprisonment and fine.
Meanwhile, 87 (74%) MLAs are crorepatis, up from 95 (81%) in the previous term. These crorepatis include 63 from AAP, 17 from Congress, three from SAD, two from BJP and one from BSP.
AAP’s Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh is the richest with a net worth of Rs 238 crore, second only to Rana GurjitSingh (Congress) with assets of Rs 125 crore and Aman Arora (AAP) with assets of Rs 95 crore. Rana Gurjit has a maximum liability of Rs 125 crore, his son Rs 17.97 crore and Arora Rs 22.88 crore. Rana Inder Pratap Singh and Arora also have the highest liability.
Narinder is one of the three AAP MLAs with minimum assets. Singh Sawna (Fazilka) with assets of Rs 18,000, Narinder Kaur Bharaj (Sangrur) and Labh Singh Ugoke (Bhadaur) with assets worth Rs 3.65 lakh. A giant-killer, Ugoke defeated Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi in the recently concluded assembly elections.
