Parthiv Patel praises ‘technically strong’ Shubman Gill

Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel praised Gill for playing with clarity in his mind and controlling the ball perfectly

Shubman Gill grabbed all the headlines on Monday night by scoring his maiden century in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Batting against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the opener scored 101 runs in 58 balls with the help of 13 fours and a six. His brilliant knock kept the Gujarat Titan innings alive as five batsmen got out for ducks while three scored in single digits. With the help of Gill’s century, Titans gave Sunrisers a target of 189 runs. In response, Mohammed Shami and Mohit Sharma took four wickets each to restrict the visiting team to 154 for nine.

Gill looked the most confident and technically sound batsman at the GT camp on Monday night. He was able to find gaps and played his shots with authority. While wickets kept falling at the other end, Gill enjoyed his outing against a lethal SRH attack led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Praising Gill, former India wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel played with clarity in his mind and controlled the ball perfectly.

“I enjoyed watching him use his technique the most. All the shots we saw, he let the ball come to him. He didn’t try and jerk it and this allowed him to successfully find the gap. When you play on a bouncy pitch, you have to let the ball come to you. That way you control the ball and hit it where it needs to go. When he got set, he managed to score a century. He has scored centuries in T20, ODI and Test cricket on this ground.

Meanwhile, Bhuvneshwar Kumar became only the second bowler after Mark Wood to take a five-wicket haul this season, proving to be a small bright spot in an otherwise dismal evening for SRH.

Praising Bhuvneshwar’s brilliant performance with the ball, JioCinema IPL expert RP Singh said, “We talk about the importance of length and how it can help in getting a five-wicket haul. If you can bowl gutter length, you should get a wicket there. Taking five wickets is very special for any bowler at this stage of the competition.

“It’s happened only twice this season. Bowling skills and what makes you special is your experience. You can read a batsman with your experience and Bhuvneshwar Kumar did that in this match.
