Test-wary Barodians Self-diagnose, Self-medicate; Docs Give Warning | Vadodara News – Times of India

VADODARA/AHMEDABAD: Dr. Hiten Kareliya, a Vadodara-based infectious diseases expert, says that even he gets patients who are reluctant to get tested. “They just want treatment without getting tested,” said he.
“Nowadays, people have started believing that this is like a common flu and take the same treatment without testing or consulting a doctor. It’s not a healthy trend as people with certain conditions can land in trouble,” said Vadodara IMA president Dr. Mitesh Shah,
As covid cases reduce in the city over the past two days as per government data, experts are pointing at the base of the iceberg where many with infections have probably not got medical help at all.
Dr Dilip Gadhvi, president of Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA), said that there is nothing like ‘non-harmful medicine’. “Every medicine has side-effects, and the treating doctor knows why some of the medicines are prescribed to a specific patient. There could be general medicines, but it should not be generalized. The wrong medication cause complications,” he said.
Dr Mehul Shah, secretary of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Gujarat state branch, said that rational and judicious use of medicines should be under guidance of the doctors only. “Otherwise we will invite other complications or masking of symptoms. We have already seen the impact of unnecessary use of steroids in the past wave,” he said.
