A massive search operation is underway in Bhata Dhurian to nab terrorists after an army vehicle carrying fruits and other items was ambushed in a border village for Iftar to be organized by a Rashtriya Rifles unit on Thursday evening .

Army’s Northern Commander Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday said necessary action was being taken against the terrorists responsible for the deadly attack on an Army truck in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

In a tweet on its official handle, the Army’s Northern Command shared Lt Gen Dwivedi’s visit to the Command Hospital in Udhampur and his interaction with the survivors of the terror attack.

The Northern Army Commander on Saturday visited the attack site in Bhata Dhurian, which is a preferred infiltration route for terrorists from across the Line of Control due to its topography, dense forest and natural caves.

Dwivedi reviewed the security in the border area and the ongoing search operation to nab the terrorists.

In a tweet, the Northern Command said it was briefed on the actions taken so far and called upon the troops to stick to their resolve.

Traffic on the Rajouri-Poonch highway was restored on Sunday morning after remaining suspended since Thursday evening, officials said, adding that search operations are underway amid high alert in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri.

He said traffic was earlier diverted to other routes to secure the highway which connects the two border districts to Jammu.

Officials said around 14-16 people have been detained for questioning.

“Among those arrested are two Degwar couples from Poonch — Iqbal and his wife Mudifa and Salam Deen and his wife Rashida,” said an official source.

The slain soldiers were from a unit of the Rashtriya Rifles deployed for anti-terrorist operations.

Sources had earlier said that the attack was suspected to be carried out by a group of three to four terrorists.

He said the attackers had probably lived in Rajouri and Poonch for more than a year and had sufficient knowledge of the area.

The Jammu and Kashmir Ghaznavi Force (JKGF) is said to be active in the region and its “commander”, Rafiq Ahmed alias Rafiq Nai, hails from the region.

Sources said that currently three-four terrorist groups are active in the region of Rajouri and Poonch.
