Terming it a ‘failure’, Thunberg calls COP26 ‘a global greenwashing festival’

Delegates from nearly 200 countries are in Glasgow to plan to meet Paris Agreement goals of limiting temperature rise to between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius. Several countries had proposed ideas for eliminating the use of coal and ending foreign fossil fuel funding.

People lined the streets in protest, as children read hand-drawn signs that read, “Stop deforestation”, “Save the planet!” and “Act Now”.

It was the biggest protest in Glasgow since the climate talks, known as COP26, about a week ago.

“They can’t ignore the scientific consensus and they can’t ignore us,” Thunberg said.

Activists have been rallying for two days to discuss the disconnect between emissions reduction promises and the way leaders have addressed the climate emergency.

With only 1.1C warming so far, countries around the world are already facing intense fires and droughts, displacement and the economic destruction caused by Earth’s warming climate.
