Skipper Mithali Raj on Sunday said the time has come for the Indian women’s team to give Jhulan Goswami a chance to think beyond serving long terms by grooming young fast bowlers for the future. Raj blamed both the batting and bowling units for India’s poor performance in the first ODI against England on Sunday.

Sent in to bat, India played 181 dot balls to post 201 for eight, which England chased down with 91 balls. During the post-match virtual press conference, Raj said about dot balls, “Yes, we need to look at that aspect and keep rotating the strike. We need our top-5 batsmen to score runs. This also needs to be understood.” The England fast bowlers are very experienced. They know how to bowl in their conditions.”
He said that the seam bowlers on his side were not right. “If we can take early wickets, it puts pressure (on the opposition). If we don’t get wickets from the fast bowlers, it puts pressure on the spinners. So we need to prepare other fast bowlers apart from Jhulan.
He should learn to understand the conditions and bowl well accordingly. Raj hit 72 off 108 balls to help India cross the 200-run mark after early dismissals from openers Shafali Verma (15) and Smriti Mandhana. 10) But his knock was not enough as the Indian batsmen failed to hit boundaries to rotate the strike and accelerate the scoring rate.
“Our batting line-up needs to be on fire at some point. Over the years we’ve been chasing goals more easily than we posted. We need to work on that, we need to know how to get to 250. But we can’t lose wickets with a bang. We need to know when to push the acceleration and how to achieve it.”

Hinting that there might be some changes in the composition of the playing XI in the second ODI, Raj said the team management should also support the players. “It is important to support the players, especially those who have done well in the past. Sometimes playing with stroke players is a gamble. But we need to support the players to prepare them keeping the World Cup in mind.
“Apart from the captain, coach and support staff, the selectors also play an important role in this and we are in constant touch with them.
