Teaching staff shortage in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban, 586 posts vacant

There is acute shortage of teaching staff in government schools in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir as 586 posts of principals, lecturers, headmasters and teachers are vacant out of the sanctioned strength of 2,073. Also, as per official data, two school buildings have been declared unsafe.

Schools in the district reopened last month after a long break due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown and winter break, and there have been constant protests by parents and students for adequate teaching staff and better infrastructure. Ramban Deputy Commissioner Musrat Islam wrote to the Director of Education in Jammu earlier this month about the “virtual collapse” of the education system in the district and suggested sending a team of senior officials to conduct an on-the-spot assessment.

“There is no doubt that the education system in our district has collapsed and immediate steps are needed to secure the future of the students,” Rajgarh District Development Councilor Mohammad Shafi Zargar told PTI. The condition of some school buildings, officials said, connecting at least two schools, Government Middle School Hiller, Rajgarh and Government Higher Secondary School Rajgarh, has been declared unsafe after officials conducted a security audit of the structures.

On the shortage of teachers, the officials said that against the sanctioned strength of 23 principals, 12 posts are vacant. Similarly, there are 269 posts of lecturers, but only 128 are posted in the district. Officials said that out of the total strength of 59 headmasters, 25 are performing their duties and 34 posts are vacant, against the sanctioned strength of 437 and 1,285, 256 posts of masters and 143 posts of teachers are vacant.
