Teachers’ Bodies Protest Against ‘undemocratic’ Sacking of Professor by Visva Bharati

West Bengal College and University Teachers’ Association (WBCUTA) and All Bengal University Teachers’ Association (ABUTA) protested the decision and demanded their reinstatement.

Two teachers’ organizations on Sunday condemned the “undemocratic” dismissal of Visva Bharati University professor Sudipta Bhattacharya for his involvement in activities detrimental to the functioning of the institution.

West Bengal College and University Teachers’ Association (WBCUTA) and All Bengal University Teachers’ Association (ABUTA) protested the decision and demanded their reinstatement.

On the other hand, Bhattacharya, an office-bearer of the Visva Bharati University Faculty Association, said the allegations were false and he was targeted as he opposed the “dictatorial attitude” of the VC against a section of disgruntled students and faculty.

He said, “I wanted an inquiry against the misdeeds of the Vice-Chancellor since he took over the reins here in late 2018. I will approach the court.”

The WBCUTA said, “Bhattacharya had opposed the repeated suspension of some students for stifling the liberal atmosphere in the central university and participating in democratic movements. We demand that they be reinstated immediately. Abuta said, “The VC has long been indulging in autocratic practices, disregarding all democratic protests. He undemocratically sacked Bhattacharya.”

Vishwabharati official, however, said that Bhattacharya was given ample leeway and was served show-cause notices at least twice on charges of various offences.
