Tata Steel will fund research and development (R&D) projects in the low-carbon hydrogen segment in partnership with the British High Commission in India. As part of the ‘UK-India Hydrogen Partnership Sprint Series’, Tata Steel said it will provide £80,000 (Rs 83 lakh) funding for two innovative projects in the low-carbon hydrogen segment.

Tata Steel said in a statement that the initiative is open to participants from India and the UK. The company said the proposals bidding for the grant are expected to address two challenges: first, the development and deployment of hydrogen technologies to green the industrial sector and solutions for hydrogen storage/purification.

“The priority for the steel sector today is decarbonizing and doing so in a way that is technically and economically sustainable.” Although the current level of carbon footprint from the steel sector is unsustainable, the available version of clean hydrogen faces several challenges. Such as higher operating costs and energy losses,” said Debashish Bhattacharjee, vice-president, technology and R&D, Tata Steel.
