Tata Safari Electric SUV spotted with green number plate, what’s the deal?

Tata Motors is the number one electric vehicle in India, with cars like the Tata Nexon EV doing well for the Indian automaker. Tata is competing to introduce new electric cars in India and has showcased a few concept vehicles this year to shed light on what the future holds for Tata Motors in India in terms of electric mobility. However, to our surprise, out of nowhere, an electric safari has been spotted by an Instagram user named ‘thatguywithweirdusername’. As can be seen in a picture shared by an Insta user, a blue colored Tata Safari is seen sporting a green number plate which is reserved only for electric vehicles in India.

The picture was taken in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and got us wondering what exactly is the matter! Since the Tata Safari is not available in an electric variant, there are two possibilities – either it is a test unit that is being tested for feasibility or it gets a retrofitted electric vehicle kit approved by the RTO, which will sport a green number plate. justifies it.

This particular model looks like a regular Tata Safari XZA+ model with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel under the hood. However, it now gets an RTO-approved electric powertrain instead of the engine. While its details are scant, companies like GoGoA1 are actually retrofitting cars with electric vehicle kits.

However, replacing the all-new Tata Safari with an electric kit seems like a bold one. Developing an EV conversion kit is an expensive process and can cost just over a few lakh bucks, especially considering the size of the Safari, this EV kit should have some impressive specifications.

Tata Motors is currently the leader in the electric car market in India, and has showcased electric concepts like the Curvv EV, Avinya EV as well as the Tata Sierra EV on display at the 2020 Auto Expo.
