Tata Motors beats Hyundai in December car sales, becomes second largest carmaker

New Delhi: Domestic automobile major Tata Motors’ passenger vehicles vertical sold more units in December than Hyundai Motor India.

Apart from passenger vehicles, Tata Motors has a major presence in the commercial vehicle segment.

Tata Motors’ total domestic passenger vehicle sales grew 50 per cent to 35,299 units from 23,545 units off-take in December 2020.

Shailesh Chandra, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors said, “The growth journey of Tata Motors’ Passenger Vehicle business continued and set several new milestones during the quarter despite production slowdown due to the ongoing semiconductor crisis.”

Chandra said that the progressive revival of the EV fleet segment along with the ever-increasing demand for Nexon EV and Tigor EV were instrumental in driving this sharp growth.
“Going forward, semiconductor supply will continue to be a major source of uncertainty. Additionally, the impact of the new strain of COVID needs to be closely monitored. We will continue to work on a business agility plan and measures to mitigate these risks. Will take proactive action,” Chandra said.

Tata Motors has reported 24 per cent growth in its domestic sales in December 2021 on a year-on-year basis.

Domestic sales increased to 66,307 units during the month under review from 53,430 units sold during December 2020.

The company’s total commercial vehicle sales increased to 31,008 units in December 2021 from 29,885 units sold during the same month last year. Total passenger vehicle sales grew 50 per cent to 35,299 units from 23,545 units off-take in December 2020.
In comparison, Hyundai Motor India’s domestic sales declined by 31.8 per cent to 32,312 units as against 47,400 units in the same period last year.

Tarun Garg, Director (Sales, Marketing and Service), Hyundai Motor India said, “Despite key component supply constraints, Hyundai has managed challenges to ensure smooth delivery of their favorite Hyundai cars to our dear customers.”
The company’s cumulative sales declined to 48,933 units last month from 66,750 units sold during December 2020.
