Tamil Nadu to showcase strengths at Swiss Biotech Day

Inputs from the event will help TN to simulate the life science ecosystem

Tamil Nadu Government will participate in the Swiss Biotech Day event to be held in Basel, Switzerland on 24 and 25 April. Basel is the largest life sciences group in Europe. Guidance officials said that understanding the ecosystem at Basel provides important inputs for emulation in Tamil Nadu.

He said that Tamil Nadu is the only state which has been invited by Switzerland to participate in the event. The invitation to India by Swiss Business Hub is part of their sponsored India Pavilion Cluster initiative. Swiss Biotech Day has become one of the leading biotechnology conferences in Europe and a fixed date in the community’s calendar.

State MSME Secretary V Arun Roy will lead the delegation to Basel, along with officials from Guidance.

This year, Swiss Biotech Days will provide space and time (one and a half days) for high-level experts from the life sciences industry to network, discuss, and discover trends in R&D, manufacturing, data management, artificial intelligence, and . Innovative Financing. The guidance may visit the “Global Village” to strengthen its ties with Switzerland as a biotech hub and promote cross-border investments, public-private partnerships, research and development collaborations and talent exchanges.

The policy says that considering the needs and aspirations of the state, the Tamil Nadu government will endeavor to attract investments worth ₹20,000 crore in life sciences and create 50,000 jobs.

Tamil Nadu has recognized the importance of the life science sector and its contribution to improving the quality of life. Vishnu Venugopalan, MD and CEO, Guidance, said the effort to enhance the life science ecosystem is in line with the state’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

He told BusinessLine that the state has over 400 companies in biotech, pharma, medical devices and a hub for medical tourism.

Companies like KRR AIR Pvt Ltd, Cryoler and INOX have availed the structured package of assistance under the special scheme and started their manufacturing operations in time to support the oxygen demand from the state and India.

Commenting on Tamil Nadu’s participation in Swiss Biotech, Industries Secretary S Krishnan said, “Our delegation will engage with leading global experts and investors at the conclave, discuss opportunities to boost the state’s roadmap and ways to boost life sciences development. Will make a concerted effort. The Medical Device Park at Oragadam set up by SIPCOT will highlight our rapid growth in the value chain in this sector.

According to Guidance CEO Venugopalan, Tamil Nadu is emerging as a natural test bed for companies innovating in health technology and medical technology.
