Tamil Nadu: Special sports training for tribal students

The Tamil Nadu Tribal Department, in collaboration with the district administration, will provide special sports training programs for tribal students.

As part of this project, the Kallakurichi district administration has started a ten-day special sports training program for the children of Eklavya Tribal Welfare School in Kalariyan hills.

The ten-day program aims to instil confidence among the children of tribal settlements who are generally reluctant to participate in sports and games.

According to the Kallakurichi district administration, around 150 children will be provided free training in volleyball, kabaddi, long jump, high jump, short put, relay and rope gymnastics. Children will also be trained in the traditional tribal game like Mallakhamb.

Speaking to IANS, Kallakurichi District Collector, PN Sridhar said, “This sports training is provided to the students of Eklavya Adivasi School as a step to empower and improve their skills. The students will be equipped with skills in various sports so that they can participate in state, national and international tournaments.

The coaches will be provided accommodation in the school premises as it will be difficult for them to reach Kallakurichi from Kallakurichi. Students undergoing sports training will also be provided hostel facility in the school itself as leaving for homes in remote areas after night would be risky due to wild animals in the area.

The state-tribal department is also facing these problems as almost all tribal schools are either located in forest areas or adjacent to forest land. After the successful completion of the sports training program being organized at Eklavya Tribal School, Kallakurichi, Kalkurichi, the tribal department will organize sports training programs in all tribal schools of Tamil Nadu.

Sources in the state’s tribal department told IANS that the budget for the sports development program for tribal students would be released from the funds allocated for health and nutrition for tribal students.
