CHENNAI: A week before the city civil court was to hear VK Sasikala’s plea challenging her removal from the post. AIADMK The General Secretary, Party Executive Committee made significant amendments to its bye-laws on Wednesday. The AIADMK Coordinator and Joint Coordinator will be elected together by one vote by the primary members of the party. understanding that o panneerselvam And Edappadi K Palaniswami will contest “as a team” when the election is announced.
Saying that the party would run from a dual leadership structure, the AIADMK tried to replicate that former chief minister J Jayalalithaa It remained its eternal general secretary, thus leaving little room for Sasikala to rejoin the party. The deposed leader has been making statements as ‘General Secretary’ of AIADMK.
“A consensus was reached between the OPS and the EPS during the last week. Senior leaders took the lead and the leadership put aside their differences for the welfare of the party. They decided to bring in changes to the bye-laws to allow primary members to speak in their election,” said a steering committee member who sought anonymity. Those who contest for dual terms must be a primary member of the party for a period of five consecutive years as per the party’s bye-laws.
Sources said that other contestants may be in the fray, but OPS and EPS have decided to join hands and fight as a team for their survival. This is to demonstrate unitedly and take on rivals firmly on the basis that they will have the support of the primary members. Following Jayalalithaa’s death, in 2017 the General Council passed a resolution creating the posts of coordinator and joint coordinator, the elections of which were to be decided by its members.
There was a sense of relief and a huge round of applause in some sections when a special resolution to amend the bye-laws was passed at the executive committee meeting at the party headquarters in Chennai on Wednesday. The general council has around 2,500 members across the state, while the party claims to have at least one crore primary members.
The bitter power struggle between the OPS and EPS groups peaked after the party failed to continue its winning streak in the April Assembly elections. Panneerselvam supported Sasikala’s return, but with a caveat that she should accept the current arrangement. However, the EPS group is adamant on closing the doors for Sasikala.
Hours before the executive committee meeting, the party leadership expelled minority wing secretary A Anwar Raja, a vocal supporter of Sasikala, indicating her intention. The committee has set the ball rolling for party organizational elections, which are long overdue and a mandatory process as per the guidelines of the Election Commission. Sources say that the general council will confirm the change in the bye-laws and the elections will start soon.
