MP from Madurai seat of Tamil Nadu S Venkatesan got angry after the Home Ministry replied in Hindi instead of English. In this matter he reached the Madras High Court. Justices N Kirubakaran and M Duraiswami, who are hearing the case, said- ‘If any letter is received by the Central Government in English, then its reply should also be given in English.’

The court said that the central government should follow the rules of the Official Languages Act, 1963. The court said that the answer to the MP should be given in English only. This is probably the first such case in the country, when the matter regarding the language in the letter has reached the court.

The matter arose when Venkatesan wrote to the ministry that the examination centers of CRPF should be set up in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Venkatesan wrote another letter, registering a protest against the ministry’s reply in Hindi. Said- He is not from Hindi speaking state. He does not know how to read Hindi. After this, he filed an application in the court and demanded that action should be taken against the officers who gave him the answer in Hindi.
