Tamil Nadu helicopter crash: Group Captain Varun Singh’s body brought to Bhopal by plane

New Delhi: Military officers of the Indian Air Force (IAF) pay tribute to Group Captain Varun Singh at Yelahanka Air Base in Bengaluru on Thursday. Later, his body was taken to his home town Bhopal. According to family sources, the body will reach Bhopal by 3 pm and his last rites will be performed on Friday.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan lauded the bravery of Group Captain Varun Singh and announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family of the Captain. Talking to the media, he said, “Naming an institution after him and construction of a statue in his memory will be discussed with the family. The state government will give a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the next of kin.”

Varun succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday (December 15) at the Army Command Hospital in Bengaluru. He was the only survivor of the helicopter crash in which the Chief of Defense Staff General (CDS) Bipin Rawat and 12 others died.

Varun Singh was put on life support system and his condition remained critical. He was brought to the HAL airport in Bengaluru from the Military Hospital in Wellington in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district last Thursday.

Indian Air Force (IAF) said on Twitter, “IAF is deeply saddened to inform about the passing away of brave heart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a helicopter crash on December 8, 2021. IAF Serious Condolences and stands. With the bereaved family.”
