Tamil Nadu government will increase forest cover by 33%: Minister Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Forest Minister K Ramachandran said here on Friday that the state government is taking steps to increase the state’s geographical area under green cover from 23 per cent to 33 per cent.
speaking at 67 wildlife celebration of the week Tamil Nadu Forest Academy, Minister said that indigenous tree species will be planted in the forests. “Wildlife can flourish only when there is sufficient quantity” forest cover. Ramachandran suggested that school teachers should encourage students to plant and nurture saplings on their birthdays. “This will help improve the green cover.”
The minister said 337 people were killed by wild animals in the last five years and the state government has given compensation to their families.
Asked about the delay in catching the tiger hiding in the Nilgiris, Ramachandran said that catching it is a challenging task and for this the forest department is using advanced technology. “People from different departments are involved in capturing T-23. Ten members of the search team for One Brigadier Veerappan are part of the team engaged in the search for T-23.
The minister also unveiled the logo of Coimbatore Forest Division. It has an elephant in the background, symbolizing the large number of elephants found in the Western Ghats.
