Meera and her aide were ordered to be released on bail.

Meera and her associate Sam were detained for about five weeks.

A lower court in Chennai on Wednesday granted bail to Tamil actress and model Meera Mithun alias Tamil Selvi and her colleague Sam Abhishek. He was arrested on August 14 for making some remarks against the Scheduled Caste community and was lodged in Tamil Nadu Puzhal Central Jail for almost a month.

According to the prosecution, Meera has posted a video on her social media handle in which she and her associates are seen insulting the Scheduled Caste community. In the video, Meera urged the Kollywood industry to remove artists and filmmakers who belong to the Dalit community.

Mira and Sam were detained for about five weeks. Hearing the petition in the trial court, Principal Sessions Judge (PSJ) R Selvakumar said that the penal provisions cannot be invoked while on bail. However, the prosecution can prove it during the trial. The judge said the court was inclined to grant them bail as they were both in custody for about five weeks, what they did was in human nature.

After the hearing, Meera and her aide were ordered to be released on bail. To their satisfaction, the court ordered them to execute a bond of Rs 10,000.

The accused will have to appear before the police daily at 10.30 am till further orders of the court. The court further ruled that the accused should not abscond and should not interfere with the evidence or witness in the case during investigation or trial.

PSJ further said that the trial court is empowered under the law to take appropriate action against the accused who violate these conditions.
