Taliban excavates Toyota car used by former leader to escape US military

Taliban members in Afghanistan have dug up a white Toyota Corolla, which was used by their former leader Mullah Omar to escape the military during the 2001 US invasion. It is worth noting that Mullah Omar has been a target of the US military since the time of 9/11 attacks in America. The quarried white Toyota has been in the ground in eastern Afghanistan’s Zabul province for more than 20 years.

Based on the AFP report, the Toyota Corolla was buried by a Taliban official named Abdul Jabbar Omari and later excavated on his orders. The vehicle was buried as a memorial to Umar by a mujahideen in the province of Jabul. In addition, burying the car gave the mujahideen assurance that the car would not be lost. Pictures of the car covered with mud while Taliban officials dug it up were also published on Twitter.

The AFP report further said that the Taliban was Mullah Omar’s Toyota Corolla which was kept in the National Museum as a ‘Great Historical Monument’. Mullah Omar is an important figure from the Taliban’s point of view as he founded the organization and led an Islamic movement in 1996 after a civil war and a strict Islamic law imposed on the country.

Afghanistan has since become the home of a jihadist group, which includes prominent names involved in the September 11 attacks such as Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. Following this, the US invaded Afghanistan to remove the Taliban government and put power in the hands of a new regime in the nation. The excavated white Toyota Corolla played its part in helping Mullah Omar escape the army at that time and move from Kandahar to Zabul province and was buried there as a memorial until later.
