Take the right risk, bet bold, says Falguni Nayyar at IIM Ahmedabad graduate

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) Today held its 57th Annual Convocation. It was held on the campus after a gap of two years. A total of 584 students from Two Year Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP), Two Year Post Graduate Program in Food and Agribusiness Management (PGP-FABM), One Year Post Graduate Program in Management for Executives (PGPX) and Ph. Management (Ph.D.) Graduated from IIM-A.

The batch toppers of each program were awarded gold medals in recognition of their academic achievements. Shubham Goyal, Vaibhav Agarwal and Nitin Kulshrestha from PGP and Amit Kumar from PGPX received medals.

This year, the chief guests included Falguni Nair, IIMA alumnus and founder and CEO of Nykaa.com, and Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIMA.

Addressing the convocation, Falguni Nair said, “Don’t be afraid to take risks along the way. You are blessed to have entered a world that is now increasingly risk friendly. Spend the early years of your career taking the right risks and making some bold bets on yourself. Test what you like and what you don’t. Take on roles that push you out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Discover new interests and improve the skills you excel at. You don’t need all the answers today about what you want out of life, but your current stage of life has the advantage of a low opportunity cost, so make the most of it. And remember, no matter what anyone says, it’s never too late to start again. Making a decision will not always be easy, and there will often be no straight answer. So, trust your gut to an extent, it will guide you well.”

Sharing his experience with the graduating students, Kumar Mangalam Birla said, “The fundamentals of business building are perhaps more true now than ever. In the coming few years there will definitely be a drastic change in the external circumstances. There will be many dazzling opportunities that will come your way, which will tempt you with their short-term promises. This is equally true in terms of your career. Therefore, it is important to stay the course. Identify what problems and kinds of people excite you and invest time in both. Ride the short-term foam.”

“Your choices have a good guiding principle as to where the energy takes you. This reflection is best explained through a quote that popped up on my WhatsApp feed this morning- “Be with those who love your magic.” out of madness, not madness,” Birla said.

Addressing the students, Professor Errol D’Souza in his traditional speech said, “Dear students for managers, the landscape has changed. It is no longer about short-term financial goals and efficient execution. Since the great financial crisis, and Even more so since the pandemic, there is some room for Elon Musk, but soft skills like compassion and cooperation are going to be a top requirement. Your thoughts on corporate strategy will be important but also climate change, discrimination and inclusion, human rights, culture war And the same will be the case with many other issues. You will have to face challenges from within the organization as well. Welcome to turbulent times. You are going to be wrong sometimes and you must accept your vulnerability. Encourage dissent and constructive criticism. I believe you have learned a lot from each other and from campus and you will go far.”
