Many Indian cricketers congratulated Mirabai Chanu as she became the first Indian to win a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He won a silver medal in 49 kg weightlifting. Many bigwigs including Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul and Ravi Ashwin wished him well. Here are some of the best responses.

Pocket-sized lifter Mirabai Chanu created history by winning a silver medal in the women’s 49kg event. This is India’s first medal in the ongoing Olympics. Chanu lifted 87 kg in snatch and then 115 kg in clean and jerk to get herself silver. But in addition to her supreme power, Chanu’s earrings – five Olympic rings – were also in focus.

Now, Chanu Karnam has become the second Indian female weightlifter after Malleswari to win an Olympic weightlifting medal. Karnam Malleswari won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Hou Zhihui of China won the gold medal by lifting a total of 210 kg and setting a new Olympic record. On the other hand, Windy Kentika Ayesha of Indonesia won the silver medal by lifting a total of 194 kg.

Overall, Chanu is the fifth Indian female athlete to win an individual Olympic medal. Before her, Malleshwari, Saina Nehwal (Women’s Singles Badminton Bronze, London Olympics 2012), PV Sindhu (Women’s Singles Badminton Silver, Rio 2016) and Sakshi Malik (Wrestling Bronze, Rio 2016) have achieved the feat.
