‘Tabyat Theek Nahi Hai to 500 Maar Diye, Tabyat Theek Hoti to…’: Shoaib Lauds England’s ‘Bazzball’ Show

The Rawalpindi Test between Pakistan and England looked to be in jeopardy as several players in the visitors’ camp contracted the virus and fell ill, while play could resume as scheduled. However, on Thursday morning, the game went on as planned and the crowd at the Rawalpindi Stadium witnessed history being made in Pakistan.

For the first time in the history of Test cricket, a total of four batsmen scored centuries on the first day. Zak Crawley (122), Ben Duckett (107), Ollie Pope (108) and Harry Brook (101*) were the four batsmen who helped England become the first team to score 500 runs – 506/4 at stumps – on opening day one Test match.

It was already a historic moment as England were playing a Test series after 17 years. The visitors scored more than 500 runs on the first day and doubled the party. Former cricketers started making fun of the game.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar heaped praise on England Test coach Brendon McCullum and referred to the ‘baseball’ theory. Sharing a video on social media, Akhtar said that if England players have made a world record despite being unwell, what could they have done if they were fit and fine?

“Thankfully, as stated in the news reports, the England players are unhurt. Yeh tabyat theek nahi hai to 500 maar diye, tabyat theek hoti to bohot bura haal karte (He scored 500 when he was sick. If he was fit and well, he would have beaten us),” Shoaib said in the video.

“their [England’s] Coach Brendon McCullum does not believe in batting slowly in Test cricket. He asks his players to score run-a-ball. England have been playing aggressive cricket since his arrival. They don’t stop. Debutant Liam Livingstone will bat at No.7, so there is depth in their batting line-up. That’s why I think Pakistan also needs to change its mindset.

“This is a young team, full of innocent people. But Test cricket is really very dangerous. Pakistan need to assess where they stand because it is not easy. It is not pleasant to see your children getting beaten Was,” concluded Shoaib.

The previous record for runs on the first day was 494 by Australia against South Africa at Sydney in 1910. More than 500 runs in one day have been achieved on only four other occasions – three times by England and once by Sri Lanka – but never on the opening day of a Test.
