Taapsee Pannu discusses why actors often avoid sharing political views, citing public perceptions and potential backlash.
Taapsee Pannu recently opened up about the challenges actors face when it comes to expressing political opinions. In a conversation with ANI, the actress shed light on why many in the film industry choose to stay silent on political matters, despite having strong personal beliefs.
“We have our own politics of sorts. It doesn’t always have to be related to a particular type of politics,” Taapsee began, explaining that the decision to speak up or stay quiet is often influenced by the fear of potential backlash. “People want to stay quiet because they feel that way or this way there will be a problem.”
Taapsee, known for her outspoken nature on issues like nepotism, acknowledges that actors are often placed under a microscope, with their every word scrutinised. She pointed out that there’s a prevailing perception about actors—especially female actors—that they lack intelligence or awareness about social and political issues.
“Actors are believed to have low IQ and people think that they hardly know anything, especially if it is a woman. Then they think, how dare you have an opinion,” Taapsee said, addressing the stereotype that actors face. This perception, according to her, is a major reason why many choose to keep their thoughts to themselves, fearing judgment or controversy.
However, Taapsee also emphasised that this situation creates a paradox for actors. “It’s a double-edged sword, I feel. If you have an opinion, then also it’s a problem. If you don’t have an opinion, then also it’s a problem,” she added, highlighting the no-win situation that actors often find themselves in. Whether they choose to speak out or remain silent, they are likely to face criticism from some quarter.
Despite these challenges, Taapsee continues to be one of the few voices in Bollywood who is unafraid to speak her mind on pressing issues.
