T20 World Cup: Team is moving in right direction, feels Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka

A clinical Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 20 runs in their Super 12 match t20 world cup 2021 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. With this defeat, the defending champions West Indies are out of the tournament.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka was happy after his win. “A very nice win, the youngsters have worked hard to get this win and I am happy for them,” he said in the post-match presentation.

Riding on half-centuries from Charith Aslanka (68 off 41) and Pathum Nisanka (51 off 41), Sri Lanka posted 189/3 in 20 overs. Apart from Asalanka, Kusal Perera (29) and Dasun Shanaka (25) also contributed with the bat for Sri Lanka.

“I knew he had potential (on Nissanka and Aslanka), he worked hard, he had a long career, and there was a lot of cricket to come. He would find a place in every team,” Shanaka said.

In reply, a brilliant half-century from Shimron Hetmyer (81 not out on 54) went in vain as West Indies lost by 20 runs at 169/8 in 20 overs. Apart from Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran also played a fighting innings (46 off 34) but that was not enough.

Wanindu Hasaranga (2/19), Binura Fernando (2/24) were the main wicket-takers for Sri Lanka.

Dasun Shanaka praised his bowlers, saying: “The bowlers were on the spot, as they have been in key parts of the tournament.”

“The team is moving in the right direction, the fans are behind us, we are grateful for them, everyone here and around the world. He is a gem (on Wanindu Hasranga), a superstar. It is still a milestone in his career. There is a beginning. He needs to be protected because he is a real possibility in world cricket,” said Shanaka.

Sri Lanka end their campaign with 4 points from their five matches as West Indies take on Australia in their last match on Saturday.
