They now take on Scotland here on Wednesday, followed by matches on Friday and Sunday, in full-day matches.

Asked if he knows what he needs about Scotland, a team he doesn’t often face, Southee said: “It’s not just an opposition we don’t know too much about and It is not often played like this, but it is also a day’s game.

“We have scouting meetings and today we have strategy and meetings and try to come up with some plans.

“No, not at all. I think whenever you go to a world event, you want to do well. The goal of every side is to go as deep into the tournament as possible and try and win it.

“So when you go to a world event the mindset doesn’t change, but for us it’s about each sport as it comes. It’s a tough tournament, a short tournament. You can’t get too far on your own.

“One of our strengths is that we take every game as it comes. Things didn’t go as planned against Pakistan but we were able to learn from it and move on, focus our attention on India. Things went well against India.”
