T20 World Cup: Adam Zampa praises ‘aggressive’ Australia after Bangladesh

Bangladesh beat Australia by an “aggressive” eight-wicket haul after spinner Adam Zampa boosted semi-final hopes with his first five-wicket haul in the Twenty20 World Cup. Zampa returned career-best figures of 5-19 as Australia ousted Bangladesh after scoring 73 in their crucial Super 12 match in Dubai.

He now has 10 wickets in four matches in the tournament.

Captain Aaron Finch and David Warner put on a 58-run partnership for the opening wicket to help take the team home in 6.2 overs and overtake South Africa on net run-rate.

“We really wanted to be aggressive,” man-of-the-match Zampa told reporters after Australia’s third win in four matches.

“The last time we played against Bangladesh, we had some interesting memories. It was a bit on our mind. We have a slightly different team (this time around), some really fast bowlers and we wanted to get aggressive early.

“In terms of the state of our World Cup and how important a big win was, it feels really good to be able to contribute. This is a satisfying and important victory for us.”

Australia and South Africa are fighting for a place in the last-four from Group 1, led by England, who have effectively sealed one of the two semi-final places with four wins from four matches.

South Africa will play England on Saturday after Australia take on the West Indies.

On regaining the momentum, Zampa said, “Obviously you want to win matches like today, but I don’t know about the full force. West Indies’ next match is on our mind. They are a really dangerous team. This Winning next is really important so we hope to cement our place in the semi-finals.”

After bowling Bangladesh out in 15 overs, the statisticians gave Australia 8.1 overs to overhaul the target and get their run-rate out of South Africa, who are now tied with Aussies on six points.

Zampa reveals the team conversation going on inside the dressing room. “There was a little talk about not worrying about the net run-rate, just trying to win these two games,” Zampa said.

“But once we got him out for 73, we had a chat in the change room before going to bat about scoring runs before the eighth over.”

Australia suffered a 4-1 loss to hosts Bangladesh in August, but Zampa said his team found some “nuggets” (useful information) on opposition batsmen in the bilateral clash in Dhaka.

Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyadh said that his team did not adapt to the conditions after losing all their five Super 12 matches in the United Arab Emirates.

Mahmudullah said, ‘When we played against Australia and New Zealand in home conditions, our bowling was good.

“But as professional cricketers you need to adapt to any conditions and when you come out of your home and play on different wickets there are many areas that you need to work on, especially our In batting.”
