T20 World Cup 2021, Australia vs Bangladesh, Preview: Australia aim for strong comeback against crestfallen Bangladesh

DUBAI: Australia will be aiming to take on Bangladesh, who have already been knocked out of the T20 World Cup here on Thursday, after batting brilliantly in their previous match. Bangladesh are out of the tournament with four losses in as many matches but Australia are ahead of the semi-finals after two wins from three matches.

The Aaron Finch-led side were looking for a formidable unit until England blew up arch rivals, exposing their weaknesses. Finch scored against England but the top order has been inconsistent and he and David Warner would like to give the team a good start. Questions were raised about left-arm spinner Ashton Agar replacing Mitchell Marsh in the playing XI against England.

It remains to be seen whether the team sticks to this combination. Glenn Maxwell is also yet to set the tournament on fire and the team will be relying on him, Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade in the last five overs.

Australia’s high-profile pace attack, including Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, was hit with a sword by Jos Buttler but he will be expected to return to his skillful form against Bangladesh. Australia, despite a weak side, lost a T20I series to Bangladesh earlier this year and they will also be looking to settle the score for that.

Asked about the defeat in Bangladesh, Agar said the situation there is very different. They have also left behind the defeat to England as they look to win their remaining two matches. “We have a very different looking side (played in Bangladesh), and the wickets are definitely not playing like the pitches we played there.

“We’ll see what happens, I guess. We’ll go out there and we’ll try and put our best foot forward. We need to win, and people are really excited to play and really want to win too. Should be a good game.” 84 all out against South Africa.

The absence of injured all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has also upset the balance of the team. Against South Africa, only opener Liton Das and Mahedi Hasan down the order offered a glimpse of the fight with the bat.

We didn’t play to our potential. We are better than this. our ability. I think we could have played better than this.”

Describing the batting effort against South Africa as poor, skipper Mahmudullah would be hoping to end the campaign on a high.
