Contrary to the end result, South Africa did not have the best of starts to chase down their target with skipper Temba Bavuma being run out early. But Hendricks, who replaced Quinton de Kock, was out for not taking a knee against racism, and van der Dussen then stabilized the innings with a 57-run second wicket stand.
After Hendrix was dismissed, van der Dussen and Markram took the lead in the final six overs to bring South Africa down the equation to 44. While van der Dussen held on to one end, Markram played an explosive knock to take South Africa home.
Markram decorated his innings with two fours and four sixes. Earlier, West Indies lost the plot to manage a modest score before Lewis scored a scintillating half-century. Lewis and Lendl Simmons (16) depart West Indies for a flight. The duo added 73 runs off 63 balls for the opening stand before West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals. Lewis did the bulk of the scoring in partnership. It was then Aiden Markram’s turn to face Lewis’ wrath as the batsman hit two sixes and a four in successive deliveries and scored 18 runs in the fifth over. Lewis then dodged Enrique Nortje at mid-off, but a ball later the bowler inspired a thin edge from Simmons, which wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen failed to catch.
Lewis was in unlucky form as he did not spare a single South African bowler. He completed his half-century by sweeping Tabrez Shamsi over deep square leg to reach the landmark in just 32 balls. Lewis continued the same way after his half-century and smashed Keshav Maharaj for a six, but eventually destroyed a ball later in the hunt for too much, dismissing Rabada at deep midwicket.
He hit three fours and six sixes in his 35-ball knock. Two quick wickets followed by a brilliant start from Lewis put the West Indies’ charge to some extent.
But Simmons’ stay was a struggle as his 35-ball knock in the Men’s T20 World Cup was the longest in terms of balls without a boundary. Nicholas Pooran (12 off 7) had a short stay as he became Maharaj’s second victim, caught by David Miller and then caught by Rabada in the next over to Simmons.
West Indies captain Kieron Pollard and Chris Gayle hit Shamsi for a six in the 16th over to the left-arm spinner.
