Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021: Karnataka edge Vidarbha by 4 runs to set up final clash with Tamil Nadu

Karnataka defeated Vidarbha by four runs in the second semi-final played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Saturday in a thrilling second semi-final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Karnataka scored 176/7 in 20 overs after half-centuries from Rohan Kadam (87 off 56 balls) and captain Manish Pandey (54 off 42 balls), Vidarbha threatened to chase down the total, but lost 14 in the final over. Couldn’t score runs. ,

Karnataka’s narrow win also means they will take on Tamil Nadu in the final on Monday, which will be a rematch of the 2019 edition finale.

Going to bat first, Kadam and Pandey set the stage for a big total with an opening stand of 132 runs. A move dropped by keeper and captain Akshay Wadkar in the opening over was quickly relieved. After Kadam fell, Abhinav Manohar continued his run of scoring 27 runs off 13 balls till the last two overs came. With a total of 180 sets, Karnataka collapsed spectacularly.

Fast bowler Yash Thakur conceded only eight runs in the 19th over, dismissing Karun Nair for just five runs. All-rounder Darshan Nalkande took four wickets in four balls, dismissed Anirudh Joshi, wicketkeepers Sharath Bharat, J Suchit and Abhinav Manohar to bring Vidarbha back into the match to finish with figures of 4/28.

Nalkande became the second bowler after Rajasthan leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi to take a hat-trick in the current tournament and the second Indian bowler after the former. India And Karnataka fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun took four wickets in four balls.

In reply, Atharva Taede hit 32 off 16 balls while his opening partner Ganesh Satish made 31 off 27 balls. A quick look at Vidarbha’s batting order reveals that all the batsmen started but none of them were able to convert that promising start into big innings.

Karnataka was also helped by their spinners, mainly KC Cariappa, bringing the team back into the match. With 42 needed from the last three overs, Karnataka conceded 13 and 15 in the 18th and 19th overs, but Vidyadhar Patil defended 14 runs in the final over to propel Karnataka into the final.
