Swearing-in Ceremony for Newly Elected Legislators in Meghalaya Gets Underway

The NPP-led alliance with 32 MLAs has staked claim to form the next government in the northeastern state under the leadership of Sangma.

The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected legislators in Meghalaya began on Monday morning with Speaker Pro Tem Timothy D Shira administering the oath of office and secrecy to the legislators.

All 59 MLAs will take oath as MLAs of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Sangma of NPP chief and outgoing Chief Minister Conrad was present at the function.

The NPP-led alliance with 32 MLAs has staked claim to form the next government in the northeastern state under the leadership of Sangma.

The NPP won 26 seats in the recently concluded elections, while its ally BJP won only two seats.

Two Hill State Peoples Democratic Party MLAs, who won the elections, have also pledged their support to the NPP-BJP alliance, along with two other independent legislators.

Two major regional parties – the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) – extended their support to the NPP-led coalition on Sunday, taking the number of MLAs supporting the Sangma-led coalition to 45.
