Veere Di Wedding starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania released in 2018.

Veere Di Wedding completes five years of its release today. The film, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, released in 2018 and revolves around a group of friends and explores the nuances and complexities of female friendship and womanhood. On its first day, the film earned over Rs 10 crore at the box office and became the biggest opener for a female-centric film released till that time. And earlier today, director Rhea Kapoor and the cast took to social media to share their joy as they celebrated its fifth anniversary.

In an exclusive chat with News18, Swara who plays Sakshi, a no-nonsense and uninhibited woman in Veere Di Wedding, looks back at the film that won many hearts and became a trendsetter of sorts. She says, “Veere Di Wedding was a very special, landmark film not only for me personally but also for Bollywood. It was the first time in the 100-year history of mainstream Bollywood that a film was made with four women, no hero and the story did not revolve around two girls falling in love with the same man!”

Bollywood has seen many friend films with male actors making headlines, but Veere Di Wedding became one of the first commercial films to talk about women and their friendship. “The film was a shameless celebration of friendship, from a female perspective, in an industry where friendship films usually center around male bonding with boys in the lead. It crafted four imperfect heroines, each with their own chaos and confusion and created a space where it was okay for women, too, to struggle with adulthood and make mistakes… a trait until now reserved for the male protagonist.

Furthermore, it portrayed real women who were flawed despite their fashionableness and reminded the audience of themselves. Talking about it, Swara says, “Veere Di Wedding was a breath of fresh air and the best part became a huge box office success and paved the way for more such stories to be created!”

Swara’s witness in the film was already married but left her husband’s house and lived with her parents. Interestingly, Veere Di Wedding was one of the first feature films to feature a female lead pleasuring herself. Swara also got a lot of backlash for this. Despite all this, Veere Di Wedding continues to be popular.
