Sutapa Sikdar on Vicky Kaushal’s Sardar Udham: It’s a dream Irrfan Khan wanted to live

Vicky Kaushal starrer Sardar Udham is all set to release on Saturday, October 16 on Amazon Prime Video, and ahead of the release, Irrfan Khan’s wife Sutapa Sikdar has opened up on her thoughts on Vicky as Sardar Udham Singh. The role was initially offered to the late actor, who could not accept it due to his medical condition. The film’s director Shoojit Sircar had earlier directed Khan in Piku.

His wife and son Babil were present at the special screening of the film. When asked about her reaction, she said, “I don’t know how to put it, but objectively, I couldn’t see the film as just a film. Sardar Udham is not just a film. Me. So, it is a dream that Irrfan wanted to live. So it is very difficult for me to comment on it as a film.”

However, he only had good things to say about Vicky Kaushal. He further added, “When I saw Vicky on screen, several pages of the diary filled me with memories. I remembered Irrfan’s enthusiasm to do Sardar Udham and his childhood joy whenever he had to play a difficult role. Seeing Vicky reminded me of Irrfan in the National School of Drama (NSD). It is unfair to compare these two at this point of time as Irfan was much older than Vicky in experience and age when he had to do the film. But, I loved Irrfan Just saw a glimpse of passion, dedication, hard work and love for cinema in Vicky’s face. I am sure Irrfan is happy to see Vicky playing the character of Sardar Udham Singh. After all, it was Irrfan’s dream role!”

Sardar Udham traces the story of Udham Singh, who shot Michael O’Dwyer in London to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In an interview to News18, Vicky had said that no one can fill the place of Irrfan Khan. “No one can fill their shoes. Irfan sahab is one of the best actors in the world for me. It is an honor for me that I have been selected for the same film.”
