Suspended Congress MLAs will vote for BJP in Rajya Sabha elections: Assam CM India News – Times of India

Guwahati: Politics over Rajya Sabha After the Chief Minister (RS) elections in Assam took a new turn Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived on sunday Suspended Congress Legislator Shashikanta Das at his Raha residence in Nagaon district of central Assam. From Das’s residence, Sarma announced that Congress The MLAs will vote for the BJP supported candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections.
Even as the Assam PCC insists that two of its MLAs – Shashikanta Das and Sherman Ali Ahmed – are bound to vote for the opposition’s candidate under a three-line whip to be issued, Sarma told the media that Das would vote for either. BJP Nominated or supported by the ruling coalition. “I do not know about Sherman Ali but Shashikant Das has informed me that he is going to vote for us in the Rajya Sabha elections. Shashikant has already publicly announced that he is with the government,” Sarma said. Incidentally, he said in the RS election, a whip has no value.
“Basically the ballot paper has to be shown to the agent. But disqualification cannot be done on the basis of vote of MLA in Rajya Sabha election.
Sarma also said that some more Congress MLAs may join the BJP soon.
Assam Congress has suspended Shashikanta Das, who created controversy by touching the feet of Sarma and state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita. Das, the Congress MLA from Raha, said he would support the BJP-led government from within the Congress to initiate development in his constituency.
The ruling BJP needs a total of 43 votes to ensure the victory of its first choice candidate, provided all 126 members of the House cast their votes. For the second preference candidate, the ruling coalition would need a minimum of 42 votes. In such a situation, the opposition will also need 42 votes to ensure the victory of its candidate. At present, the opposition parties have 44 votes in the state assembly, including an independent MLA. It also includes two votes from Sherman and Shashikant. BJP and allies have a total of 82 votes.
Meanwhile, the opposition accused CM Sarma that his announcement from Shashikant’s house was a “threat to democracy”. “Probably, the CM went to meet Shashikant Das to put pressure on him to vote for him in the Rajya Sabha elections. I condemn such acts,” Leader of Opposition Devvrat Saikia told the media.
Akhil Gogoi, an independent MLA and president of Raijar Dal, said that Shashikant’s behavior is motivated by personal interest. “It is not only a threat to democracy but it is condemnable as far as human morality is concerned,” Akhil said.
Congress and other opposition parties have once again fielded former Assam PCC president Ripun Bora for the Rajya Sabha elections from Assam, while the BJP has fielded senior party spokesperson Pabitra Margherita. BJP’s ally United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has nominated Ravangawara Narzari for the elections to be held for two seats in Assam on March 31.
