Sushant Divgikr, popularly known as Rani Ko-Hee-Noor, has many reasons to celebrate. 2023 started with a bang as she became the first drag queen to represent India at DragCon in the UK in January. In February, he was part of the panel at the prestigious Harvard University India Conference and spoke on behalf of the transgender community. They’re all set to mark their big Bollywood Starting soon. To add to these feats, Sushant recently completed recording Marvel’s Wastelanders, a podcast series presented by Marvel Entertainment and audible. The segment titled Star-Lord features Sushant playing the role of Kora, a Regilian recorder, and also features the voices of actors Saif Ali Khan and Vrajesh Hirjee.

In a freewheeling and exclusive chat with News18, Sushant tells us that he took inspiration from legendary actor Rekha, whom he sees as the ultimate drag icon, to play his character in Star-Lord. “My character is gray and it’s bisexual. It’s not male or female because she’s a machine. If I had to draw an analogy, I would say Korra is the lone ranger. She doesn’t need anyone, even Even a colleague. I would like to say that Kora is learning from Rekha ji,” he says with a smile.

Sushant revealed that he has a theater background and credits it for helping him record for the podcast. Highlighting the same he says, “Theatre helped me. And since I am also a singer, my Riyaz helped me to fine-tune my voice. I started with theatre. I did a lot of musical theatre. I was actively doing it for some time when I was young. I would say it was my first acting job. I also did Shakespeare and that was pretty heavy. In the audio field, I have done other series. But in Marvel Wastelanders, I played a recorder for the first time.

But lending his voice to an audio series like Marvel Wastelanders was no easy task. Talking about it, he comments, “I felt like I was Alexa’s cousin (laughs). Having said that, for the first two days, I was dying! I was like, Not happening! It was hard enough to sound like an AI recorder. I never could have imagined that someday I would play a Marvel character and that AI recorder be there. On the third or fourth day, the character finally settled into me and I could switch on and off But the first two days, I was praying to all the gods!”

What made it a special experience for Sushant was that it was an extremely ‘democratic’ process and the autonomy given to each artist helped break down barriers set by the hierarchical film industry. “There were days when I could just come in and record two episodes but I had other commitments. On other days, if there was a performer in the studio, I could come in so we could do our lines together. We could have come as per our schedule. And that’s what I love the most, ”he says.

Sushant further says, “Didn’t expect you to be on time like anyone else. So, there wasn’t that hierarchy of artists. It was such a democratic place, it was like an equal playing field. There was a sense of autonomy and we didn’t feel bad about other people when we were available because we had their voices, which were integrated by the core team.

Sharing his excitement about collaborating with some established and senior actors, Sushant said, “The series also stars Ashish Vidyarthi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vrajesh and they are such amazing actors. I literally grew up watching him. In the continuum of things, there are others like Yashaswini (Dayama) with whom I started. But these are giants in our industry. Speaking in the same breath with him makes me feel like I’ve won my prize (laughs)! I’m feeling humbled.
