‘Mankading’ or ‘running out the batsman at the non-striker’s end’ has been one of the most popular methods of dismissal in the game of cricket. While it is true that the MCC has declared it legal, it is still considered against the spirit of the game. Whenever there is a discussion about it, Ravichandran Ashwin is mentioned because he dismissed Jos Buttler through this method in an IPL 2019 game. The Indian off-spinner was heavily criticized for his actions but even now, he believes that the bowler reserves the right to get the batsman out in this manner.

Recently, for the first time such an incident was seen. India vs Sri Lanka ODI in Guwahati. The hosts were on the winning side while opposition captain Dasun Shanaka was nearing his century. In the final of Lanka’s chase, fast bowler Mohammed Shami lost wickets as Shanaka left his crease before the ball was released by the bowler. However, Indian captain Rohit Sharma intervened and withdrew the appeal before the umpire’s decision was announced.

Speaking in his latest YouTube video, Ashwin expressed his opinion on the entire incident of Shami’s run out attempt.

“Look, even if a fielder appeals, it is the duty of the umpire to declare a player out. Therefore, I find it surprising that there is so much taboo surrounding this method of dismissal. But the whole dismissal is related to what the bowler does, isn’t it? It’s up to the bowler to make that dismissal or make that appeal or take that decision, right,” Ashwin said.

“In so many games, a batsman walks out and walks away without waiting for the umpire’s decision. At that time the captain of the batting team would not come and ask, ‘With whose permission did you go like this? Have you forgotten the reasons for the team? Go back and keep playing. These different treatments for bowlers and batsmen have been happening for so many years,” he said.

Maintaining his stand, Ashwin stressed on the fact that it all depends on the appeals of the bowlers as to how the umpire gives his final decision.

“I will keep repeating only one thing. The state of the game is immaterial. It is a valid form of dismissal. And in fact, if you ask for an LBW appeal, or a caught behind appeal, no one will ask the captain whether he is convinced of the appeal or not. If the bowler appeals then they will get him out and that is the end of it,” Ashwin further said.
