Actor Suriya’s Itharakkum Thunindhavan hits the theaters on Thursday, March 10. And, looks like all is not well at the actor’s end. A section of people has demanded that Suriya’s film should not be shown until the actor apologizes. And, as a result, the police have provided security to Surya’s residence in Chennai. So why are these people apologizing? This is because of Surya’s Jai Bhima.
Earlier, Vijayvarman, the state secretary of PMK Students’ Union, had written to Theater Owners Association asking them not to show Suriya’s film. The letter states that Suriya’s films will not be screened until the actor publicly apologizes. “On behalf of PMK and Vanniyar Sangam, I request that actor Suriya’s films will not be screened in Cuddalore district until he publicly apologizes to the people of Vanniyar community, who have called Vanniyar his film Jai. portrayed in a derogatory and violent manner in Bhima.” read the letter
Suriya’s film Jai Bheem created a lot of controversy in the initial weeks of its release last year, as the film was said to portray the Vanniyar community in a bad light.
Jai Bheem, a film based on the life of Rajakannu, an errular man who died in police custody, was released in November 2021. Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, former Union Minister and current head of the youth wing of Pattali Makkal Katchi, wrote a letter. Suriya and the filmmakers after the film’s release, claiming that the film retained the names of all real-life characters except the police officer responsible for Rajkannu’s death.
Vanniyar Sangam had filed a criminal complaint against director Suriya and Amazon Prime for defaming and insulting Vanniyar in the film Jai Bheem.
Meanwhile, there is Atharakkum Thunindhavan directed by Pandiraj. The film stars Suriya and Priyanka Mohan in lead roles. Etharkakam Thunindhavan was initially scheduled for theatrical release on December 24, 2021, coinciding with the Christmas weekend.
