‘Suresh Raina started crying’ – Axar Patel recalls how Team India bid farewell to Test captain MS Dhoni

“He announced it the very next day on the evening of the second day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The atmosphere had changed. Everyone was silent and Ravi’s (Shastri) brother called a meeting. ‘Everyone… we have to make an announcement. Mahi is retiring’. (Suresh) Raina started crying. I was like ‘What just happened? Everyone around me was bursting out. I was in another world,

‘What just happened? What’s going on?’,” Akshar told actor, television and cricket presenter Gaurav Kapoor on his famous YouTube show ‘Breakfast with Champions’.

“I didn’t even know what to say. I was meeting Mahi bhai for the first time. But before I could say anything, he only said: ‘Bapu (the name of the letter… you came and let me go’) ? I was like ‘What did I do?’. Then I tear up… I just came and he’s leaving. He said he was just joking and then hugged me,” the letter said.
