Surat police ban loitering outside educational institutes, women hostels | Surat News – Times of India

SURAT: On Wednesday, in an attempt to curb the rising crimes against women in the city, the city police commissioner issued two relevant notifications with immediate effect.
However, the city police’s knee-jerk action may be more considering the brutal murder of 21-year-old college student Grishma Vekariya, who too had been stalked continuously by the murder accused Fenil Goyani even on the day of the incident. According to sources, the order may have also been an offshoot of the recent demonstrations by political parties and the public demanding ouster of the state home minister for the deteriorating law and order situation in the city.
Be that as it may, the police claimed that keeping several similar complaints of harassment by other young women in the city in view, they have finally decided to come up with precautionary action to curb rising instances of women-centric crime especially eve-teasing in the Diamond City.
The first notice prohibits males from standing or sitting within a 50-metre area of educational institutes and girls’ hostels without any valid reasons.
The other notification orders equipping coffee shops with proper CCTV cameras.
“Any society seems affable when all groups of the society can live with peace and fearlessness, it is more important that women and minor girls are able to leave the house without any fear. Few antisocial elements harass females while they are going to school/college or their job places, in some cases attack or rape incident also took place”, the notification reads.
It further said that “to stop such incidents and increase women safety, from February 17 to April 17, males are prohibited to stand or sit without valid reason within 50 meters of any school/college/coaching institute and women’s hostels which falls under Surat city police commissioner’s jurisdiction.”
The other notification, which is also valid for the same time period, strictly bans couple box facilities in coffee shops, hotels, cafes, and restaurants in a bid to stop unlawful activities and offenses like rape and blackmailing. Owners have to make seating arrangements that are clearly visible and install mandatory CCTV cameras in the shops.
