Surat, known for producing 90% of the world’s diamonds, now has a notable building for its thriving industry. According to a CNN report, a recently opened building in Gujarat’s diamond hub Surat has overtaken the Pentagon as the world’s largest office building.

‘One-Stop Destination’

As per reports, Surat Diamond Bourse, which is described as a “one-stop destination” for over 65,000 diamond professionals such as cutters, polishers and traders, will welcome its first tenants in November. It consists of a series of nine rectangular designs radiating from and interconnected through a central “spine”, and the 15-story complex is constructed on more than 35 acres of land.

After four years of development work that was partially stalled due to coronavirus-related delays, the Surat Diamond Bourse is all set to invite its most memorable tenants in November. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the official inauguration, which is scheduled for later this year.

Area, Cost and other details

The exchange has more than 4,700 office spaces, which can also serve as small diamond-cutting and polishing workshops. Similarly the advancement includes 131 lifts as well as food, retail, health and convention facilities for the workers.

The head of the work, Mahesh Gadhvi highlighted the merits of Surat Diamond Bourse and how it would save a large number of people from everyday travel to Mumbai via train for business purposes. He characterized it as a “better alternative” to guiding precious stone exchange practices.

The Surat Diamond Bourse was built by the Indian engineering firm Morphogenesis, which won an international design competition. Gadhvi told CNN that doing better than the Pentagon was not part of the competition brief. Rather, the size of the enterprise was dictated by demand, he said, adding that the workplaces were completely bought by diamond organizations.
