SC reserves its decision on the issue of reservation in promotion to SC / ST

The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its verdict on the issue of reservation in promotions to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in government jobs.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice Nageswara Rao heard all the parties in the matter including Attorney General KK Venugopal, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Balbir Singh and other senior lawyers appearing for different states.

The Center had earlier also told a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai that it is a fact of life that even after nearly 75 years, people belonging to SCs and STs have not been brought to the same level of competency as the upper classes.

Venugopal had submitted that it is more difficult for people belonging to SC and ST to get higher rank in Group A category jobs and the time has come when the apex court should give some solid ground for SC, ST and OBC (OBC) to fill vacancies.

The bench had earlier said that it would not reopen its decision on the issue of reservation in promotion to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) and said it was for the states to decide how they were going to implement it. Huh. Same.
