Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud today (July 22) said that the Supreme Court conducted 43 million virtual hearings during the Covid period. He said that courts across the country have also conducted similar virtual hearings to facilitate lawyers and litigants to attend courts for disposal of cases.
Justice Chandrachud said that this has paved the way for inclusiveness and access to justice. The CJI also said that values matter, adding that science and technology can empower people to secure freedom, equality and social justice.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to misuse, mislead, intimidate and even bully people, he said, adding that while social media has allowed people to connect with others cutting across age and geographic barriers, it has also led to online abuse and trolling.
The Chief Justice of India was addressing the convocation ceremony of the 60th batch of students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. The CJI told the students that preventing misuse of technology for harmful purposes would be a major challenge for them.
Justice Chandrachud said, “Today I want to leave you with two questions that I hope you ask yourselves. What values does your technology represent and what are its possibilities.”
He further added, “When I say value, I do not mean the monetary value of your ideas, innovations or technologies. I mean what theoretical values the technology represents and, more specifically, what values it drives in the context you want to deploy it.”
