‘Supermom’ tigress Collarwali breathed her last in Madhya Pradesh’s Pench Tiger Reserve

New Delhi: Collarwali, the “supermom” tigress of Pench Tiger Reserve, passed away on Sunday due to old age. Officials said the tigress, identified as T15, had earned the tag of ‘supermom’ as she gave birth to 29 cubs.

An official from the office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) confirmed the tigress’s death to PTI without sharing any further details.

A press release issued by the Pench Tiger Reserve said that the tigress died in the Karmjhiri range of the reserve at around 6.15 pm on Saturday. His carcass was disposed of as per the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and his viscera was sent to laboratories for examination, the release said.

Officials said that between 2008 and 2018, Collarwali gave birth to 29 cubs in eight litters of 11 years old. Of the 29 cubs, 25 survived. The tigress, which looks yellow due to old age, was last seen by PTR visitors on January 14

Officials said that the female cub with radio collar in March 2008 became radio-collared again in January 2010 and that is how she was named ‘collarwali’ or T15 tigress.

Collarwali’s first litter was in May 2008 when she gave birth to three cubs, but unfortunately, they did not survive. Her last child, four cubs, was born in 2018, taking her total to 29. Officials believe this number could be a record.

She was born in September 2005 as one of the four cubs of the famous T-7 tigress.

According to experts, the average lifespan of a tiger is about 12 years.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan tweeted, “Tributes to ‘Super Tiger Mom’ Callerwali of @PenchMP pride of Madhya Pradesh & mother of 29 cubs who played a vital role in achieving Tiger State status for MP. Pench Tiger The forests of Madhya Pradesh will always resonate with the roar of the cubs of the ‘Queen’ of the reserve.

“Mythical among legends. Collarwali is the famous tigress whose name has a record of giving birth to 29 cubs. She is no more. But left her species in good health,” tweeted IFS officer Parveen Kaswan. He added, “Kollarwali Also one of the most photographed tigresses in the world.”
