Sunrisers Hyderabad names Umran Malik as short-term Covid replacement for T Natarajan

Indian Premier League franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad has announced that medium-pacer Umran Malik will join their squad as a short-term Covid-19 replacement for T Natarajan, who is falling apart after testing positive for the virus last week. Huh. Malik currently traveled to UAE with the SRH team as their net bowler IPL 2021.

Left-arm pacer Natarajan had tested positive for COVID-19 on September 22 ahead of the team’s fixture against Delhi Capitals. He was put in isolation along with six close contacts, including all-rounder Vijay Shankar.

The match between SRH and DC went ahead after the rest of the SRH team tested negative for coronavirus.

Malik has played one T20 and List A match for Jammu and Kashmir and has taken a total of four wickets. He is already a part of SRH as a net bowler.

“Under Regulation 6.1(c), franchises are permitted to sign a short-term replacement player until the original team member is allowed to re-enter the team’s bio-secure environment. Therefore Malik only Sunrisers Hyderabad will be part of the squad until Natarajan recovers and is allowed to join the squad,” IPL said in a statement on Friday.

Meanwhile, SRH have resumed their IPL 2021 campaign on a losing note as they were thrashed extensively by a dominating DC.

Batting first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, SRH struggled to reach 134/9 after losing consecutive wickets and failing to build a good partnership. DC easily overhauled the target, finishing on 139/2 in 17.5 overs.

This performance has reduced their chances of making the playoffs to a great extent.

The loss was SRH’s seventh loss of the current season and they remain at the bottom of the points table with two points from one win. They will return to action against Punjab Kings at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
