Summer vacation in Maharashtra schools from May 2 to June 12, School Education Department proposes

Maharashtra’s school education department has sent a proposal to the state government to declare summer vacation from May 2 to June 12. The department said in the proposal that the total academic holidays will remain unchanged in 76 days while the holidays can be adjusted. By the district education officer during the Ganesh Chaturthi and Christmas holidays, The Time of India reported.

There is ambiguity on the dates of summer vacations in Maharashtra schools due to a government proposal asking schools to declare results in May.

While the state education officer later issued a clarification saying that the order was only for those schools whose curriculum is lagging, no correction GR was issued in this regard. The School Education Department has now contacted the state government and sought clarity on the matter.

The department has proposed to resume classes from June 13 as per the practice of opening schools on the second Monday of June in Maharashtra. Schools in Vidarbha region of the state start their academic session from the fourth week of June due to scorching heat.

Earlier, the education department had announced that the state board’s schools for classes 1 to 9 and 11 would work full day till April 30 to compensate for the academic loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Usually, the holidays for classes 1 to 9 start immediately after the end of the annual examination till April 15.

However, the extension decision was not received well by many schools in the state. Pune District Principal’s Association president Harishchandra Gaikwad criticized the move to expand classes and said that schools have made preparations to conduct annual exams as per the previous schedule.

He said the department should have issued an order at the end of February giving some time to the schools to make changes in the schedule. Gaikwad said the department could have postponed the opening of schools in the new academic session instead of delaying the summer vacations.
