Sumbul Touqueer Khan also revealed how he had initially rejected Imlie as he thought ‘what lead role would I do’.

Before winning hearts with her performance in Bigg Boss 16, Sumbul Touqueer Khan was popularly known as ‘Imlie’ for playing the role of a village girl in the show of the same name. However, in a recent interview, Sumbul shared some shocking details and revealed how she was often judged by her skin tone in the showbiz industry.

Sumbul reveals she ‘cried a lot’ after being called ‘Kali’

Sumbul reveals how many people said “arre kaisi ladki ko cast kar liya, kaali hai” after Imlie was acquired. She admitted that even though she ‘cried a lot’ because of such comments, things changed after her show ruled the TRP charts. “I felt very bad that day and cried a lot but things started changing after the telecast. Our initial TRP numbers were 2.2 and the numbers only went up from there, it never came down till I was a part of it. People forgot what I looked like, they just noticed my work. Even people who disliked me started praising me,” Sumbul told E-Times.

Sumbul initially rejected Imlie

Sumbul also revealed how he initially rejected Imlie as he thought ‘what lead role would I do’. She also called her Imlie audition the ‘worst’ she ever gave. “I really started believing that if I have this skin colour, I can never be a heroine. When Imlie was offered to me, I was not sure if I would get the role, I straightaway said no and rejected the offer in the beginning itself. I thought what lead role would I play. But they asked me to send the audition clip. The worst audition of my life so far, if any, was the one I gave for Imlie.”

Sumul: Everyone wanted only fair-skinned actors

During the conversation, Sumbul also shared how her initial days in the showbiz industry were ‘very tough’. She mentioned how everyone wanted ‘only fair-skinned actors’ and said it was ‘humiliating and degrading’ to her. “Color is not important for me. I started feeling that if you are dark then you cannot become a lead heroine. If you see, all the heroines were mostly fair. I have nothing against anyone but this is what I believed But this stereotype was shattered when I won Imlie,” she said.
