Of the total manufactured sugar, sugar production in Maharashtra – the country’s leading producing state – increased to 13.68 million tonnes as of May 30 of the current marketing year, as against 10.63 million tonnes in the year-ago period.
Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s second largest producer, declined to 102 million tonnes so far this year from 11.01 million tonnes in the same period a year ago.
The data shows that the production in Karnataka increased from 4.25 million tonnes to 5.92 million tonnes.
As of May 30, crushing work was still going on in about 50-odd mills, mostly in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The government has set limits sugar export 10 million tonnes in the ongoing 2021-22 marketing year as a precautionary step to ensure adequate availability of the sweetener during the festive season in October-November.
