‘Such guts must be crushed’: Raj Thackeray meets Thane civic official, attacked by hawker

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray said on Wednesday that hooliganism among illegal hawkers should be quelled when he met senior Thane civic officer Kalpita Pimple, who was a street vendor during an anti-encroachment drive. His security guard also suffered injuries. Thackeray visited the hospital and inquired about Pimple’s health. He appreciated the courage shown by him and wished him a speedy recovery. Later speaking to media persons at the hospital, Thackeray, whose party MNS is known to carry forward the agenda of sons of the earth, said in Marathi that he was saddened by the incident. “But at the same time, such trends are getting stronger”. “MNS’ fight against illegal hawkers will continue… Such ‘guts’ of these forces should be crushed,” he said.

Thackeray said he discussed the issue with senior police officials. “The police is doing its job. We are hopeful that the accused will be punished severely. The court is also doing its job,” he said. The accused hawker, identified as Amar Yadav, who had attacked Pimple and later threatened to commit suicide, was arrested.

The video of the accused shouting and stabbing went viral on social media. The Kasarvadavali police had registered a case against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 307 (attempt to murder) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty).

The incident sparked outrage and condemned by political parties and various sections. Maharashtra BJP Vice President Chitra Wagh also visited the hospital and inquired about the health of Pimple and the security guard.

Launching a scathing attack on the Shiv Sena-led MVA government, he said, “The law and order situation in Maharashtra is deteriorating rapidly. Women are no longer safe in the state.” Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske had said that the civic body would bear the cost of treatment of the injured officer and his security guard. Thane Guardian Minister Eknath Shinde visited the hospital around midnight on Monday to inquire about Pimple’s health.

To condemn the attack on Pimple, the general body meeting of Thane Municipal Corporation was adjourned without any business on Wednesday. A corporator said the general body may discuss the entire issue in the next meeting.

As a protest, employees and officials of Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) protested the incident and wore black ribbons. He submitted a memorandum to the BNMC commissioner.
