Apart from cancer, bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon Dr. Aparna Govil Bhaskar pointed out the innumerable problems caused by obesity.

A review of several studies found strong evidence that being overweight or obese increases the risk of at least 13 types of cancer. Strong evidence is already available in the public domain to link five cancers to being overweight or obese: adenocarcinoma of the esophagus; colorectal cancer; breast cancer in postmenopausal women; and cancer of the uterus and kidney.

Now the International Agency for Research on Cancer has identified more cancers associated with overweight and obesity. They are meningioma, multiple myeloma, adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and cancer of the thyroid and postmenopausal breast. Apart from these, cancers related to gallbladder, stomach, liver, pancreas, kidney, ovary, uterus, colon and rectum (colorectal) are also associated with weight gain. Of these cancers, only colorectal cancer cases are preventable with early detection. Screening prevents new cases by detecting abnormal growths in the colon and rectum before they turn into cancer.

Apart from cancer, bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon Dr. Aparna Govil Bhaskar pointed out the innumerable problems caused by obesity. In an interview to The Financial Express, he said that these problems are type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, joint pain, PCOS and infertility. Not getting enough physical activity is also a major reason for people becoming obese.

Since being overweight is associated with dangerous problems like cancer, people should take some necessary measures to get rid of it. The best way to treat obesity is to eat a healthy and low-calorie diet. Exercising regularly is also another important step for people to get rid of excessive weight. Apart from these, other steps that must be taken to lose weight are-

join a local weight loss group

do activities such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming or tennis for 150 to 300 minutes (two and a half to five hours) a week

eat slowly and avoid situations where you know you may be tempted to overeat

People may also benefit from receiving psychological support from a trained health care professional to help them change the way they think about food and eating.
