Student Jumps Off Hostel Building Due to Ragging in Assam, CM Assures Strict Action

The Assam Police has detained three students following the incident where a student at Dibrugarh University jumped off the hostel building to escape from ragging. The incident took place at the PNGB hostel of the university on Sunday.

According to media reports, the police said that the three detained students allegedly ragged their junior, a resident of Amguri, who was staying in the PNGB hostel. After ragging, the victim jumped from the two-storey hostel. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he is being treated. However, the main accused is still absconding.

Reacting to the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a tweet that he was closely monitoring the matter and efforts were being made to nab all the accused. The Chief Minister of Assam also appealed to the students to shun ragging.

“It has come to notice that a student of Dibrugarh University has suffered injuries in an alleged case of ragging. A strict vigil was maintained and coordinated action was taken with the district administration. Efforts are on to arrest the accused, the victim is being treated. Appeal to students, say no to ragging,” he tweeted.

One such incident came to light when a video of a student being assaulted by seniors went viral on social media. The incident took place in ICFAI Business School (IBS), Hyderabad. It can be seen in the video that the accused is making the victim lie on the bed.

One of the accused can be seen attempting to attack him after one of the victims was put down. They also took out the purse from the victim’s pocket and seized it. The victim alleged that she was abused, thrashed and even sexually assaulted.

Acting on the complaint of the incident, the Cyberabad police arrested the students involved in the incident. On the basis of the video, the accused have been charged with attempt to murder. Any student facing ragging in a higher educational institution can lodge a complaint by visiting the Anti-Ragging Helpline set up by the UGC.
